My mom and I recently took an amazing adventure to Decorah, Iowa. Decorah is a cute city in northeast Iowa, that is surrounded by gorgeous nature. We had no idea this area existed prior to this trip. We had been wanting to do a canoe trip, and I was specifically searching south of Minneapolis. I came across a blog that was about the Upper Iowa River, in Decorah. It boasted about how this was the most beautiful place to paddle in Midwest AND that the city has great biking, so it immediately had my attention. I also remembered I had seen a neat property on Airbnb that was in Decorah. The property was a barn silo that has been renovated into a small home! Super cool! Also, super weird for two girls from the city! Ha-ha! I called my mom and we had a good laugh about how we were going to the farm, and then I booked the property! We were SO HAPPY with our stay.

Paddling the Upper Iowa River

Biking on the Trout Run Trail
We arrived late on a Friday and had no problem finding the property via our GPS. Most of the trip from Minneapolis was freeway and highway until we were just outside Decorah. We then took a couple small, dark, dirt roads surrounded by high cornfields! In the day light and once we knew where we were they were much easier to navigate! We arrived at the Barn and easily knew we were in the right place because of the train caboose that the property owner also rents out. The entrance to the silo was from the deck of the barn, and was easy to find and access. We could park right at the bottom of the stairs.

The beautiful barn!

The exterior and entrance
We opened the door to the silo and were so pleased and blown away by the work that had gone into this property. Everything was perfect down to the small details.
The silo has two levels of living space. The bottom floor had a small kitchenette, fridge, microwave, TV, and table with chairs and a pull-out couch.

Main Level Sitting area and kitchenette
The upper level had bunkbeds, another TV, and a small bathroom complete with a shower.

We loved all the details of the decorating, we called it cowboy styled! The walls were beautiful and the way the designers fit everything in the small space was cool.

- The cute sink
Outside the silo there were chairs on the large wrap around deck to sit on where you could watch the sunset and the horses. We had a great time out here in the morning enjoying coffee and in the evenings enjoying wine.

The property feels very private even though you are technically in the owner’s backyard. There were also people staying in the caboose and we did meet them, but we had plenty of privacy away from them as well. We loved meeting the owner, he was an amazing guy who was a lot of fun to talk to! He took time to show us what he does with his horses and shared some stories about life in Decorah and on the farm.

A perfect way to stay in Iowa
If you are looking for a unique place to stay in an amazing area check on Silo on the Ridge in Decorah, Iowa. You will not regret it (unless you are really tall – the bunk beds are very average sized)! Click HERE for more on what to do during your visit!

November 9, 2017 at 6:38 pmI have some friends that converted a windmill into a rental unit, but I’ve never heard of a silo being used as living space. Such a cool idea! Looks like a great place to stay.

November 9, 2017 at 6:37 pmI stayed in the self catering accommodation of a working farm on my last vacation and really loved waking up to the sound of birds chirping and cocks crowing. The silo looks so well fit out and comfortable. I’ve never stayed in one but now I won’t think twice of including it as an option for future trips.

November 9, 2017 at 6:36 pmThe silo looks so interesting from the inside. I’d have never imagined that there are several levels of rooms for living inside. Very creative!
November 8, 2017 at 8:24 pmWe were very impressed by how it was made! I didn’t expect multiple levels either! It was very cool!
November 9, 2017 at 6:35 pmA silo! It had no windows, hadn’t it?
November 8, 2017 at 8:29 pmHow did you feel about that?
Very curious post! 😉
There we windows on the ceiling in the upper room and one on the door in the lower level. To be honest I Didn’t even really notice there were not many windows!

November 9, 2017 at 6:33 pmA silo converted into a house…so awesome!!! The details you photographed are really neat. Also, the barn itself is beautiful! I would love to stay at that Airbnb! It must have been so fun staying there. The pastoral views plus canoeing and biking make it even better! Northeastern Iowa is so beautiful and peaceful. (By the way, I’m from Minnesota, too!)
