7 Fun Things to do in Boston, or nearby

I  love Boston! My husband and I have good friends who lived there for a while, and we were lucky enough to make a few trips out to visit. Every time we went to Boston we came home with tons of great stories and lasting memories! The people are great, the history is great, and there is always something fun going on!

1.  Check out the different areas of the city
There are so many great areas to see in Boston, day and night and the public transportation is great and very easy to navigate. I’ll list a few places where we had a great time: “Beacon Hill” is a very nice, upscale area filled with great restaurants and shopping. “Harvard Square” in Cambridge is home of hundreds of restaurants, bars, retail stores, entertainment venues, bookstore, museums and more. The “Faneuil Hall Marketplace” is filled with history and is a great place to people watch and enjoy the city. Two wonderful outdoor areas to be sure to check out are “Boston Commons” and the “Boston Public Garden”!

2. Take a day trip to Salem
Salem is just a short, easy train ride from Boston. You catch the train right at TD Garden and before you know it you are in historic “Witch Town”. Salem is located right on the water and is a wonderful and adorable town. We had so much fun here. In Salem, there is a painted red line throughout the city that you can simply follow from site to site. While we were in Salem we visited the Witch Dungeon Museum, The Witch House, The Old Burying Ground, The Salem Maritime National Historic Site, The Wax Museum and a variety of other museums and shops. We also did a little bar hopping, which is always fun. Our favorite bar was called “In a Pigs Eye”, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Salem; excellent food and excellent beer! We not only had a fabulous time in Salem but we learned SO MUCH. I think everyone should go at least once!

3. Catch a game at TD Garden
“The Garden” as the locals would say, is home of the Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics is a must see arena for sports fans. My husband and I are huge sports fans, and we knew the second we entered TD Garden to catch our train to Salem that we would have to come back to experience a game in this excellent arena. Lucky for us, there was a Bruins game scheduled for that night! When we returned from Salem we bought tickets, found a little Bruins bar around the corner from the Garden and hung out until game time. IT WAS AWESOME! 😉

4. Check out the Sam Adams Brewery
Quench your thirst at the Sam Adams Brewery. It is a great time and it’s free! My advice would be to arrive as early as possible to avoid long waits. Here you will learn about the history of Sam Adams and taste the hometown brew. Pretty wonderful! Also, Pizza Luna located across the street from the brewery is a great place to stop in for lunch!

5. Walk the Freedom Trail
One great way to see the city is to walk the “Freedom Trail”. The trail is marked with a red line on the sidewalk and guides you through many of the historic sites in the city. You see so many cool sites on this walk, from the site of the Boston Massacre to Paul Revere’s House to the Bunker Hill Monument. You will learn a lot, get great pictures and have a great time enjoying the city.

6. Spend a summer day at Fenway Park
Fenway Park, “America’s most beloved ballpark”, has been the home ball park of the Red Sox baseball club since it opened in 1912 and currently is the oldest MLB stadium still in use. Fenway is considered one of the best known sports venues in the world and you should not go to Boston in the summer without catching a game! The stadium is surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops and the excitement you can feel from fans before a game is electric! Cask ‘n Flagon is a great bar for a pre-game drink. You can feel the history of the stadium the second you see it. It is amazing to think of everything that has happened and all the greats that have graced the field at Fenway. fenway-park

7. Have a drink (or a few) at Cheers
A very obvious must see in Boston and I highly recommend it. The bartenders were a ton of fun and the food was great. We went in planning on having one beer and before we knew it I was learning to pour crazy shots behind the bar and was topping off beers for customers. We not only got a ton of free drinks, but we also had a blast!

I was Born in Boston and grew up in Woburn. I joined the Army after College, but always go back home. I get chiles up and down my body when singing Sweet Caroline at Fenway. Good article too.

My friend lives in Boston so I love going up to visit her! We actually went and spent a whole day in Salem during Halloween time and it was amazing! We made hats and everything. Another thing I would recommend is the Mapparium in The Mary Baker Eddy Library. It’s a huge 3 story colorful glass globe that is awesome to go into! Check it out!

Hey, great post! I’ve never visited Boston but it’s a city I’ve always thought of going to (not a massive flight from the UK, for a start!). Your post has given me tons of great ideas and made me want to visit even more!

I also love Boston! I went to college nearby in Providence, so it was an easy trip for me. I never went to Cheers, but I’m glad to know the food is good! I’ll have to try it next time!

Great tips! I’ve never been to Boston, but my goal is to visit all 50 states. Boston will most likely be where I stop in Massachusetts, and I will certainly be taking everything you listed in consideration, especially the trip to Salem. A college friend actually lives in Boston. Maybe I’ll pay him a visit sooner than later.

My dream would be to have just enough time and money to spend a few months in the US and after reading your post about Boston I would totally add this city to the list, together with Salem of course since it looks so cool!

Before reading this, I knew nothing about Boston (other than the existence of the Red Sox, but I thought they were basketball and not baseball, oops) but now I want to visit!! I had no idea Salem was so close, but Sabrina the Teenage Witch was my favourite TV show growing up so I’ve always wanted to go there for that reason alone.
